Visit Nice: history, culture and activities not to be missed

A short history of Nice

Nice, located on the magnificent Côte d’Azur, has a history dating back over 400,000 years, as evidenced by the prehistoric remains discovered in the region. Founded by the Greeks around 350 BC under the name of Nikaïa, Nice quickly became a major commercial port. It came under Roman rule, then under the control of the Counts of Provence, and finally the Duchy of Savoy.

In the 19th century, Nice became a destination of choice for the European aristocracy, seduced by its mild climate and breathtaking scenery. In 1860, Nice was annexed to France, ushering in an era of modernization and rapid development. Today, Nice is a dynamic cosmopolitan city, renowned for its thriving tourism and rich cultural heritage.

Cultural and architectural heritage

The Promenade des Anglais is undoubtedly Nice’s most emblematic avenue. This famous promenade runs for 7 kilometers along the Baie des Anges, offering spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea. Lined with palm trees, luxury hotels and beaches, it’s the ideal place to stroll, cycle or simply relax and admire the panorama.

Vieux Nice, with its narrow, winding streets, is the historic heart of the city. Its colorful buildings, bustling markets and picturesque squares create a typically Mediterranean atmosphere. Don’t miss a visit to the Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate, a jewel of 17th-century Baroque architecture, and the Cours Saleya, renowned for its flower market and local produce.

The Colline du Château, although no longer home to a castle, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and the Baie des Anges. This verdant park is perfect for a stroll, with its waterfalls, lush gardens and archaeological remains.

The Musée Matisse, located in the Cimiez district, houses a vast collection of works by Henri Matisse, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Housed in a 17th-century Genoese villa, the museum traces Matisse’s artistic development, from his earliest works to his last, offering a captivating insight into his creative career.
