Meet Angelina, self-taught artist

What if numbers told a story?

At Nohô, we love meeting people. We love discovering the journeys of passionate individuals, understanding what drives them, and entering their world.
Pastel dust, a special sheet of paper, and a cat as her muse: that’s how it all started again for Angelina, a self-taught artist.
After Covid and a change in her work routine, she rediscovered drawing… and a passion she thought she had lost.

5 questions for Angelina, passionate artist

How did you get back into drawing?

I used to work full-time. Then I switched to part-time, and then Covid hit… In short, I had a little more time on my hands. And since I hadn’t been drawing at all, I thought, “Why not give it another go?”
I was mostly doing dry pastels on plain paper, but I wanted to improve the finish. I searched online and discovered a special paper for pastels. I tried it out with a drawing of my cat… and it worked really well! Since that day, I haven’t stopped. It’s become a real need.

You work with both pastels and acrylics. What are you trying to achieve with these two techniques?

They are two completely different worlds.
Pastel is very precise, realistic, and often focused on animals. It requires a lot of patience, discipline, and concentration.
But after a while, I need to take a break, to free myself a little. That’s when acrylic takes over: I do abstract art, I let myself go completely.
I learned by watching Antony Chambaud’s videos, and then I tried out different things, like stencils. And when I saw how it turned out, I thought, “Wow, this is really cool!” Now I’m much more daring with this technique.

Where does your passion for art come from?

I’ve always drawn, ever since I was little. At first it was little figures, like everyone else. Then as I got older, I wanted to try other things.
But it was really in 2021 that everything took on a new dimension. My family said to me, “You should sell your paintings, you have so many!” I hesitated, I was afraid… And then I looked into how to register as an artist, and it was easier than I thought.
So here I am: I’ve been an official artist since 2021.

Do you have a piece of work that you are particularly proud of?

Yes! My boyfriend asked me for a lion (it’s his zodiac sign). And I loved doing it. It’s at home now, right next to the tiger.
And speaking of which, I just redid the tiger, but in A3 format. It was quite a challenge. I’m really proud of the result. You can see it on my website, and it’s for sale, by the way.

Do you have any other passions?

Oh yes! Besides painting, I love lots of things:
I do a bit of watercolour painting, photography, and some retouching when I have time. I used to do scrapbooking and sugar paste flower modelling too…
And I love semi-precious stones, especially labradorite. I bought one once and thought, “What am I going to do with it?” I watched a tutorial, gave it a try… And now I have my own little collection of homemade jewelry.
I’m even thinking of offering other Nohô meetings: pastel painting, stone setting, crafts… My office is full of stuff, it’s a real Aladdin’s cave. It’s all just lying there. It would be nice to revive all that and share it with others.
