Peter, Nohô Host in the Arcachon Basin: 30 Years of Passion for the Titanic and Maritime History

For Peter, it all started with a card from the *Les Incollables* series that featured the name “Titanic.” Thirty years later, he is a member of the French Titanic Association, in charge of special exhibitions in France, and a collector of authentic artifacts related to one of the most famous shipwrecks in history. Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Peter Pilate, and I’m 39 years old. I’m currently in the process of changing careers; I used to be a mason and am now looking to transition into the field of cultural mediation and maritime heritage. I’ve organized a few exhibitions and given some talks, and I’m a member of the French Titanic Association, where I’m in charge of special exhibitions in France.

Tell us about your passion.

My passion for the Titanic has lasted for about thirty years. It all started with a question on the TV show *Les Incollables*—the name “Titanic” intrigued me. Then, while browsing in a store, I came across a book featuring a painting of the ship, and that’s when it all began. Since then, as research on the subject has evolved, I’ve become increasingly interested in the ship’s history. I collect authentic artifacts, reproductions, books, scale models, decorative items, postcards—anything truly connected to the history of the Titanic. I also pay a little homage to the movie, because the Titanic wouldn’t be as well-known without it. But what really fascinates me is the ship’s history as told through these collectibles, reproductions, and originals.

Do you participate in exhibitions and conventions?

Yes, with the association we organize exhibitions, maritime-themed events, and conventions. We’re in touch with several European associations: the British Titanic Society, the Germans, and the Canadians. We participate in events together, often linked to iconic historical sites. We’ve been to Belfast, Southampton, and Liverpool. And soon, we French members are trying to organize something near Cherbourg, at the Cité de la Mer, featuring a tour of the museum and the artifacts from the wreck on display there.

What do you offer on Nohô?

A gathering centered around my collection, either at my home or at exhibitions, depending on the occasion. What I really want is for these to be friendly, sharing experiences that honor history.
