What is Kabaddi?

Kabaddi is a team sport that combines tag and wrestling, with simple but captivating rules. Each match pits two teams of seven players against each other on a rectangular or circular pitch. The objective: one player, called the “raider”, must enter the opponent’s camp, touch as many players as possible, then return to his camp without being caught. All the while, he must repeat the word “Kabaddi” without catching his breath.

A sport steeped in history

Originating in ancient India, Kabaddi was originally a training method for warriors. Today, it is a national sport in India and a recognized discipline at the Asian Games. Although it is less well known in Europe, federations are emerging in several countries, testifying to growing interest.

Why is Kabaddi gaining in popularity?

  1. Simple rules: No expensive equipment is required, making it accessible to all.
  2. Emotion and intensity: Matches are short (20 minutes per half) but intense, offering a captivating spectacle.
